Accessing and Using NIC Digital Resources

This guide provides how-to's, links, and relevant information for accessing and utilizing the various software, internet programs, and more that are provided by NIC and used in class instruction.

Office365

Microsoft Office365 is an online version of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). NIC provides access to Office365 to all enrolled students, faculty, and staff.

Using Microsoft Office365 Online

In order to access & use Office365, you can follow the instructions below or review the NIC manual PDF linked here. Note: these instructions are best applied for computer use but can be helpful for mobile use as well.

  1. Begin by logging in to MyNIC using your NIC username and password (if you need help finding this information, please contact the IT Help Desk). For information about how to use MyNIC, you can learn more at this guide.
  2. From here, click the "Cardinal Mail" Icon (it is usually at the top of the Services section, but can also be found by searching "Cardinal Mail" in the search bar at the top of the page):

  1. This will take you to your NIC email account which is operated by Microsoft Outlook365. In order to access other Microsoft apps and services, you'll want to click the 3x3 square icon on the top left of the screen:

  1. Selecting this icon will display all of the Microsoft apps and services available to you. Select any of these (or view more options by selecting "All apps") to begin a new, blank document and begin working:

Downloading Microsoft Office365 for Use Offline

If you prefer to have access to Microsoft on your computer, you can download the apps by logging in to MyNIC and searching for "Install Microsoft Office."

Select the "Install Microsoft Office" icon and you will be taken to a new screen titled "Apps & devices." Under the "Office" option, select "Install Office." Note: if you would like to install Office apps and services on your phone, there is an option below "Skype for Business" that will instruct you further. Once you click "Install Office," follow the on-screen instructions to complete the install.

Using a Mobile Device for Classwork

Access the Canvas mobile app through the Apple Store or the Google Play/Android Store.

Downloading Microsoft Office365 Onto Your Device

If you prefer to have access to Microsoft on your device, you can download the apps by logging in to MyNIC on your phone's browser and searching for "Install Microsoft Office." (1) Click on the "Install Microsoft Office" icon. (2)

You will be taken to a new screen asking you login; use your MyNIC Email Address. This will redirect you to the NIC login page where you will type in your MyNIC username and password.

Following those steps, you will be taken to a screen titled "Apps & Devices." Under the "Office" option, you will see the "Get Office on your phone or tablet" section. Select either iOS for Apple devices, Android for Samsung and Google devices, and Windows for Windows devices.

Once you select the appropriate download type, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the install.

Google Suite is a set of free, online, office programs that you can access by creating a Google Account. These services are cloud-based meaning the products and your associated files can be accessed from anywhere you have an internet service

You can find the mobile download links and learn about how to use essential Google Suite products at the links below:

  • Calendar : lets you keep track of important events, share your schedule, and create multiple calendars
  • Docs : lets you write essays, reports, etc.; create joint project proposals, keep track of meeting notes, and more (like Microsoft Word)
  • Drive : lets you keep all your work in one place, view different file formats, and access your files from any device (like OneDrive or DropBox)
  • Sheets : lets you hand task lists, create project plans,m analyze data with charts and filters, and more (like Microsoft Excel)
  • Slides : lets you create slide decks, project presentations, training modules, and more (like Microsoft Powerpoint)
