Library Instruction - Philosophy

Molstead Library builds its library instruction principles on the Association of College and Research Libraries' Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. The Framework identifies six foundational concepts of information literacy:

  • Authority is Constructed and Contextual
  • Information Creation As a Process
  • Information Has Value
  • Research as Inquiry
  • Scholarship as Conversation
  • Searching as Strategic Exploration

Faculty Librarians work closely with classroom faculty to develop and deliver information literacy instruction (IL) with the goal of developing students into competent beginning researchers. Librarians address identified student learning outcomes for each subject or assignment through the careful selection of instructional content and pedagogy. Instruction may be delivered in either the library's classroom or the faculty member's.
